Restoration Projects
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 504

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 504, an operating EMD SD24, was brought into the diesel shop in February 2002. Currently in BN paint as 6244, this SD will soon be restored to Q paint. The first steps will be back dating the steps on all four corners, replacing a couple patches to some rusted steel around the short hood, and moving some of the sill doors to their correct locations. The photos below show much of the progress to date, the photos are displayed with the most recent near the top to the earliest near the bottom.

November 2002
This was a patch that was welded over a lot of rusted steel, it began to bulge out badly. We cut it out and will replace it by welding a sheet flush with the existing skin after cleaning the rust up so it'll last a lot longer than the railraods patch job. Photo by James Kolanowski, Nov 10, 2002.

October 2002
As we dig deeper and deeper, we find little things that need to be done that turn into big projects. This is a before and after view of a main reservoir MU pipe that was badly rusted, and we did break a hole in it as we removed it. So many other pipes had to be removed just to get to this one. The main reservoir tanks, air pipes, and winterization hatch has been removed. The area shown here under the tanks has been needlechipped. The tank straps will be cleaned up as well. Photo by James Kolanowski, Mar 24, 2002.
All of the screw holes had to be drilled and tapped, which took a bit of time on the 4 grills. Photo by James Kolanowski, Mar 17, 2002.
The radiator grills and shutters will be removed to clean, prime and paint the compartment. Nearly all of the screws holding the grills snapped while removing them. The shutters will also be sandblased, primed and painted. Photo by James Kolanowski, Mar 3, 2002.
The dynamic brake grills are removed to clean, prime and paint the compartment. This is to prevent rust streaks when the unit is painted. Photo by James Kolanowski, Mar 3, 2002.
