Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 504

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 504, an operating EMD SD24, was brought into the diesel shop in February 2002. Currently in BN paint as 6244, this SD will soon be restored to Q paint. The first steps will be back dating the steps on all four corners, replacing a couple patches to some rusted steel around the short hood, and moving some of the sill doors to their correct locations. The photos below show much of the progress to date, the photos are displayed with the most recent near the top to the earliest near the bottom.

February 2006

The newer class light frames were cut out, and all surrounding areas ground smooth in preperation of the installation of the original style class lights. Photo by James Kolanowski, Feb 16, 2006.

January 2006

The floor of the nose at cab level was cut to size and set in place, although it has yet to be welded. The entire area under this floor has been needlechipped or wire wheeled. Next comes priming and painting. Photo by James Kolanowski, Jan 22, 2006.

The bottom portion of the front pilot was removed in preperation of the new original pilot, which still has to be built. The entire area was needlechipped and all unneeded holes welded closed.
