Because of a mechanical issue discovered this spring while preparing Frisco steam locomotive 1630 for 2025 operations, the Museum has made the difficult decision to remove the locomotive from service immediately. The Museum will now begin a federally mandated 1472-day inspection so 1630 can be repaired and returned to service. This inspection work had already been planned, but will commence earlier than anticipated. In parallel with this effort, mechanical work continues on Union Pacific 428, with the current focus being the rebuild of the pilot truck and construction of a shop truck so that the remaining drivers can be removed.
The work needed to complete repairs and 1472-day inspection work on Frisco 1630 will require significant funding, and donations are needed to enable this effort to hit the ground running. Click here to help IRM return the Decapod to service as soon as possible.
J. Neils Lumber Shay 5, IRM’s other operation steam engine, will be operating a full schedule this year. Visitors are encouraged to check the Museum’s website calendar later in May for updated information on dates with scheduled steam locomotive operation.
