Color position lights (CPLs) like this one used a combination of color and position to communicate signal indications to train crews. Additional lights, like the single white light mounted over the CPL, could be used to provide additional information. This signal was located where the Pennsylvania Railroad and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad crossed in Xenia, Ohio.
