Construction work on Barn 15 is complete, and on Friday, February 27th, the Museum received the occupancy permit for the building. Over the weekend, IRM volunteers began switching equipment into the barn, starting with passenger cars and diesels. The completion of Barn 15 comes 10 years to the month after the completion of the previous two storage barns to be built, Barns 13 and 14. This new structure adds roughly 2,000 feet of additional indoor storage space and allows for dozens of pieces of historic railway equipment to be moved from outdoor storage, where they are subject to damage and deterioration from the elements, into secure indoor storage.
Barn 15 would not have been possible without the donations of IRM supporters and members, who contributed the funding for the building through donations to individual pieces of equipment and to department-specific indoor storage funds. The Museum thanks all those who contributed to this project. To learn more about the RAIL Project, of which Barn 15 is one of the final currently funded components, click here.
