Celebrate Independence Day weekend at the Illinois Railway Museum with three days of family fun, historic trains, and festive summer activities—all in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States! Enjoy an expanded schedule of operations featuring steam, diesel, and electric trains—including rare equipment not often seen in service—running throughout the long holiday weekend.
Bring the whole family and make a day of it with classic summer fun across the museum grounds. Kids can enjoy lawn games, a bounce house, face painting, and temporary tattoos, adding even more excitement to a day already filled with train rides and exploration. In honor of the occasion, there will be an Old Glory-themed scavenger hunt. Pack a picnic or grab a bite from the diner as you relax and take in the atmosphere.
On Friday at noon, you can participate in a reenactment of the infamous 1957 abandonment of the Chicago Aurora & Elgin, when thousands of riders were left stranded in Chicago. Don't worry - the Chicago & North Western will help get you back home!
Kick off the weekend Friday evening with the popular Trains & Tunes concert, featuring live country music by BUCKLE! and a festive crowd—followed by a fireworks show to celebrate the holiday in style.
Whether you’re a railfan or just looking for a unique way to celebrate the Fourth, this is the perfect way to experience history in motion while celebrating America’s 250-year legacy.
