Internal Combustion Locomotives

Amtrak 231
Description: | Diesel-Electric F40PHR |
Equipment Information
Amtrak 231 is representative of the iconic F40PHR-type locomotive type that formed the backbone of the railroad’s fleet of passenger locomotives from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. It was built at the EMD plant in La Grange, Illinois, and served on Amtrak routes across the country until its retirement in October 2001. This type of locomotive was Amtrak’s first to be built with head-end power (HEP) to generate electrical power for lights and HVAC in the train. Engine 201 was purchased for preservation in 2002 by the founder of DynaRail and was donated to IRM by that organization in 2025.
