Bordens Milk (BFIX) 520
Description:BMT Steel Milk Car

Equipment Information

Bordens 520 is arguably the most iconic freight car preserved at the museum. It is a “butter dish” milk car, so called because of its unusual Art Deco-inspired shape. It was designed for hauling fresh milk inside of large glass-lined tanks. At the end of its career, after the transportation of milk had switched to over-the-road trucking, this car was used to transport glue products.

COMPARE ME WITH: GPEX 1021, a milk car built for identical use some ten years later. The more utilitarian GPEX car looks much like a boxcar on the outside, unlike the stylish Bordens car.
