Chicago & Illinois Midland 65
Description: | NE Steel-Sheathed Cupola Caboose |
Equipment Information
Chicago & Illinois Midland 65 is a standard railroad caboose designed for general freight service over the C&IM system in Illinois. It has a centered cupola on the roof to provide the conductor better visibility over his train. It was originally wood-sided, built to a design very similar to contemporary Illinois Central cabooses, but in 1940 it was rebuilt by the C&IM with steel sides. During the late 1970s, coal traffic on the C&IM dropped due to competition from newly-developed western coalfields, and this caboose was retired in May 1979. It came to IRM one month later.
