Description:Double-end arch-roof steel coach

Equipment Information

South Shore Line 28 is a heavyweight steel coach built for interurban service between Chicago and South Bend. In the 1940s the car was modernized; it cut in half and an 18′ section was inserted into the middle of the body to lengthen the car while at the same time it gained widened sealed windows and was air-conditioned. It ran in service for 55 years until it was retired in 1984.

FUN FACT: South Shore 28 is unusual in that it uses three completely different types of fuel. Its motors, lights, and heat run off electricity, of course. It also has an auxiliary heat system that burns coal using a large cast-iron stove in the car. And finally, its Waukesha air-conditioning system burns propane.
