Railroad Passenger and Baggage Cars
Elgin Joliet & Eastern 8726
Description: | Army Troop Sleeper |
Equipment Information
EJ&E 8726 is an Army troop sleeper designed to haul soldiers during World War II. The U.S. Office of Defense Transportation ordered a total of 2,400 cars of this design as quick, basic transportation for the country’s armed forces. This car was built by Pullman at its Michigan City, Indiana, shops. The car was fitted with seating and three-high bunks, with the lower two bunks folding up to create seats during the day, to provide long-distance accommodation for troops. It also carried its own Pullman porter and would have traveled in a train with a kitchen car to provide meals en route. This car was later used by the EJ&C as a “camp car” for housing maintenance-of-way crews.
