Description:Modernized Coach

Equipment Information

Grand Trunk Western 5316 is an all-steel heavyweight coach used on the GTW system between Chicago and points in Michigan. It is known as a “day coach” to denote its configuration for longer-distance transportation, with more comfortable seating than a short-haul commuter coach. It was originally built by Pullman as a 26-seat “parlor-1DR” (parlor car with a single drawing room) and named “Melanie.” In 1941, it was sold to Canadian National and rebuilt as a coach, gaining modern features like a streamlined roof and air conditioning. It later ran for the GTW, a CN subsidiary.
