Alco 1941 Grand Trunk Western 85451
Alco 1941
Grand Trunk Western 85451
Description:Water Car/Tender, Class U (Vanderbilt)

Equipment Information

GTW 85451 was built as a “Vanderbilt” style steam locomotive tender. It was originally semi-permanently coupled to a steam engine and would carry water and coal to supply the engine itself. This tender was later used as a water car numbered 85451 after steam engines on the GTW were retired.

COMPARE ME WITH: IC W4150, an older “standard” type tender. Water car/tender 85451 is known as a “Vanderbilt” type because it has a cylindrical water tank with the coal bunker sitting atop it, rather than a square water tank with the coal bunker in the middle as on a standard locomotive tender.
