Illinois Central 40285
Description: | XM Wood Box Car |
Equipment Information
IC 40285 is a boxcar equipped with double-width doors for easier loading. It is a “single-sheathed” car, built with exposed structural members and only a single layer of siding. When new, it was an automobile boxcar and had full-width doors at one end for loading automobiles. It also had a “door-and-a-half” arrangement on each side, with one wide and one narrow door instead of the two wide doors it has now. The IC rebuilt the car in the 1950s to its current appearance, with two full-width side doors and no end doors. Car 40285 is a rare example of a boxcar built by the Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Company of Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
COMPARE ME WITH: Rock Island 264070, a single-sheathed automobile car with full-width doors at one end that was built just one year after this car. When IC 40285 (originally numbered in the IC 162401-series) was new, it would have looked very similar to the Rock Island car.
