Description:Diesel-Electric F40C

Equipment Information

Metra 614 is the only preserved example of an F40C diesel passenger locomotive. It is a “cowl unit” that is mechanically similar to an SD40 but has a cowl, or carbody, built over the locomotive to give it a more streamlined appearance. It is one of 15 locomotives of this type that were built for the North and North West Suburban Mass Transit Districts, which supported commuter service out of Chicago over the Milwaukee Road North and West lines. Later, this commuter operation was absorbed into Metra. The locomotive was built in nearby La Grange, Illinois, at the Electro-Motive plant there, and features stainless-steel side panels that were unique to this series of locomotive. It was initially retired in 2004, was brought out of retirement and refurbished in 2009, and was permanently retired in 2012.
