Internal Combustion Locomotives
Milwaukee Road 33C
Description: | Diesel-Electric E-9A |
Equipment Information
Milwaukee Road 33C is a diesel passenger locomotive known as a “cab unit.” It was built to haul long-distance passenger trains like the Olympian Hiawatha and was later rebuilt to pull commuter trains between Chicago and the northern suburbs. As part of this rebuild it was equipped for one of its two diesel engines (“prime movers”) to be set up as a constant-speed generator for powering a train of bi-level commuter cars, a pioneering system later used in diesel locomotives ordered by Metra.
