Equipment Information

N&W 1459 is an all-steel baggage car used on the N&W system in Virginia as a “storage mail” car. Cars like this were hauled in passenger trains and were used for carrying mail, express freight, and other less-than-car-load (LCL) shipments. This particular car has an unusual history. It was constructed as a parlor car named “Barneston” and used in service mostly on the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1941, Pullman sold the car to the N&W, which rebuilt it as a coach. In 1947 it was rebuilt again as a baggage-coach car, or combine, and then in 1952 it was rebuilt yet again as a storage mail car, essentially a baggage car. It was retired in 1969.
