Internal Combustion Locomotives

Burlington Northern Santa Fe 9400
Description: | Diesel-Electric SD70MAC |
Equipment Information
Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) 9400 is the first production locomotive used in freight service in America to be built with AC traction motors. It was originally constructed for the Burlington Northern, or BN, and was dedicated in a ceremony in January 1994 in Texas alongside CB&Q 9911A, which was on loan from IRM. The success of this type of locomotive led to AC traction motors being almost universally adopted for railroad use by the early 2000s.
