Frisco 1630 Restoration

IRM's Steam Department is hard at work conducting Frisco 1630's regular 1472-day inspection. As part of this work, we need to replace the locomotive's 194 boiler tubes and 28 superheater flues. The cost of these items is significant, and we are asking for your help to see this important project through to completion.

Please consider sponsoring one or more superheater flues ($1,300 each) or boiler tubes ($115 each) to help us get Frisco 1630 back in steam. Unless they choose to remain anonymous, each sponsor will receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution; recognition in Rail & Wire, the Museum's official news magazine; and signage on campus.

The federally mandated 1472-day inspection is a comprehensive inspection of a steam locomotive's boiler shell, firebox, and tube sheets, as well as replacement of boiler tubes. It is required to take place after 15 years of service or 1,472 operating days, whichever comes first. Frisco 1630, the Museum's 1918 Baldwin-built "Russian" 2-10-0 Decapod locomotive, is now undergoing its 1472-day inspection. Planned work includes:

  • Replacing 194 boiler tubes
  • Replacing 28 superheater flues
  • Rebuilding or replacing all 27 superheater units
  • Replacing the tender tank
  • Repairing metal wastage in the cab
  • Inspecting and making other required boiler repairs

Steam Department volunteers have already made significant donations toward this project, and are working hard at the work items listed above, but a lot of money still needs to be raised to complete the restoration work. Please consider donating so that IRM can return North America's last operating "Russian" Decapod to the rails.
