Standard 1922
Chicago Rock Island & Pacific 2524
Description:Commuter Coach

Equipment Information

Rock Island 2524 is an all-steel, open-platform commuter coach. Intended to carry commuters between Chicago and the southwest suburbs, it was designed with high seating capacity and open platforms to speed loading. This is the only car of this type preserved at IRM that underwent modernization work including installation of ventilation fans and other changes.

COMPARE ME WITH: Lackawanna 561, a commuter coach built 13 years earlier for an identical purpose. The older Lackawanna car is heavier, has fewer seats, and has an older-style “railroad roof” instead of the more austere arched roof on the Rock Island car.
