Freight Cars
Minnesota Dakota & Western 3049
Description: | LU All Door Box Car |
Equipment Information
MD&W 3049 is an “all-door” boxcar built for carrying lumber to market from the Pacific Northwest and northern Minnesota. It was designed with the car sides comprised of four huge doors, all of which could be opened for easy access to the interior of the car. The MD&W was a short-line railroad and subsidiary of Boise Cascade operating out of International Falls, Minnesota.
COMPARE ME WITH: IC 40285, a car built 32 years earlier with the same challenge in mind: better access to the car’s interior. The much older IC car has double-width doors capable of opening roughly one-third of the car’s interior for loading.
