Santa Fe 44043 is a class Bx-W standard boxcar built for general freight service over the AT&SF system. It is a “double sheathed” car, built with its major structural members concealed beneath tongue-and-groove wooden siding. It is the oldest wooden boxcar preserved at IRM.
COMPARE ME WITH: Soo Line 33096, a boxcar built for similar service just three years later. The Soo Line car is of a much more modern design, built with a steel girder underframe for better structural strength and exposed bracing to reduce weight.
